Decimus Junius Juvenalis (AD 55–128) known in modern times as Juvenal, was a Roman poet who authored the Satires, which was/is a collection of satirical poems, which addressed real and perceived issues facing Roman society at the time. In Satires X (yes that’s Roman numeral 10) Juvenal observed that commoners can be placated with panem et circenses, in Latin, translated to English as bread and circuses. According to Merriam-Webster, the definition bread and circuses mean, “a
